Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Only Fighting Gennady Golovkin, Others at 155 Pounds, 'We Are Very Comfortable at This Weight'

The camp of Canelo "Saul" Alvarez is standing pat on its decision to fight only at 155 lbs., which may now cause some complications on his supposed next fight.

After that unanimous decision win over now-former champion Miguel Cotto, the stage was somehow set to see Alvarez facing Gennady Golovkin in 2016, the WBC’s recognized mandatory challenger.

Before the Alvarez vs. Cotto face-off, the WBC made it clear that the winner will have to face Triple G. If not, the winner -- which in this case is Alvarez -- would be stripped of the title. According to the latest report from the Bleacher Report, Alvarez trainer Eddy Reynoso said that his boy will only fight at 155 lbs.

The recent pronouncement that was reported on the Bleacher Report casts a dark future on a possible Alvarez vs. Golovkin match, something that would have been pretty interesting to look out for by next year.

This wasn’t the first time that word of Alvarez not fighting at 155 lbs. has come out. The Mexican himself made it known that he does not intend to move up to the required 160 lbs. catchweight at least for now and that if Golovkin wants to fight him, it must be at 155 lbs as reported via Fighthype.com.

Golovkin, on the other hand, has made it known that he has no intention of giving in to the possible stipulation, saying that he will only fight on his natural weight of 160 lbs. which is the medium for a natural middleweight.

The same holds true for the WBC who has made it clear that they have no intention of recognizing the stipulation that Alvarez is leaning on.

With a problem now up in arms, it will be interesting how things will turn out once negotiations commence. Golovkin could give in to Alvarez’ demands though it depends on how things go from here.

Golovkin is undoubtedly a rising star, but the lack of a credible opponent to help cement his rise to fame has been an issue. Such was sighted as well by fighters who have avoided him, using his lack of star power as a reason (for now) not to face him.

For the part of Miguel Cotto, trainer Freddie Roach singled out that Golovkin doesn’t have the PPV draw to make a big fight happen, hence a reason why they are not considering him as Cotto’s next opponent according to Boxing News 24.

Hence, it would not be surprising if Oscar De La Hoya and Alvarez are thinking the same.

Talks between the two camps haven’t official started though a compromise could end all these conflicts. However, one has to wonder which camp will give in just to make another blockbuster fight materialize for 2016.
