Taking Medicine During Pregnancy, What Pregnant Women Should Know

Pregnancy is one of the most vital stages of a human life, hence correct knowledge of health care especially on what kind of medications a pregnant woman must take to preserve the health of the baby and the mother are important.

To help clear the issue, Registered nurse Alfred Rome was invited to speak along with MothertoBaby.org about "caring for pregnant women," according to Fox news. "Eat healthy, get plenty of rest, and keep active for a healthier pregnancy," Rome said.

In addition, WebMD instructed pregnant women to avoid taking over the counter drugs (OTC) without physician's prescription as this might be dangerous to the growth of the fetus inside the womb. The report stated to substitute the use of medication into a natural remedy that is naturally healthy to an individual. However, a careful evaluation must be done in buying natural remedies as some can also be toxic to the baby.

Meanwhile, a prenatal vitamin such as a folic acid is necessary as this promotes in fetal growth and development of the organs. Another consideration that experts emphasize is when a pregnant woman gets sick and medication must be taken. In this case, Benadryl and Claritin are safe to use if bronchial problems occur.

For a cough and flu, Tylenol, saline nasal drops or spray, warm salt/water and gargle are recommended to use as they are the mildest form of medication when it comes to lung problems. In the case of outer skin problem, still precaution must be done to prevent pregnancy complication. Therefore, it is recommended to use Bacitracin, Benadryl Cream, and Caladryl Lotion ointment to treat irritation and rashes.

Some medications might be safe to take such as the ones mentioned above, but still, pregnant women need to see a doctor first, especially on the first trimester for further health advice.
