5 Healthy Foods for the Expectant Mom

Food preference during pregnancy is synonymous with inconsistency. There are multiple factors that hinder expectant moms from following a nutritious dietary plan. Despite the erratic nature of their food cravings, pregnant women should never forget to take in the following goodies to get them and their babies on the right track.

1. Whole grains

Whole grains are rich in fiber, iron, selenium and antioxidants which protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Al Arabiya English pointed out that expectant moms need fiber in order to have a smooth flowing digestive system. Fiber also limits constipation and glucose intolerance which can potentially cause gestational diabetes.

2. Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits have generous amounts of Vitamin C aka ascorbic acid. This particular vitamin aids the body in absorbing iron which is very important for the child's growth. Expectant moms can choose lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines. One citrus fruit is enough to fill the body's daily vitamin C requirement.

3. Fresh produce

What else can be said about fresh fruits and vegetables? They contain all sorts of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Parents.com warned pregnant women not to be complacent. Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed before consumption in order to prevent food infections such as salmonella, listeria and E. coli.

4. Salmon

Salmon is rich in omega-3, a type of fat that improves bodily functions and lowers the risk for heart disease. In pregnant women, omega-3 is good for a child's eyesight, brain and central nervous system. Salmon also has calcium and protein, two very essential macronutrients that help in the development of strong bones, teeth, muscle, skin and blood.
