UTI Prevention: 6 Home Remedies To Relieve Your Urinary Tract Infection's Discomfort

The symptoms of UTI such as burning with urination and pain can be cured early. There are some home treatments that may hinder the infection from getting more severe.

With some simple and healthy tricks, your UTI might be gone in no time. Everyday Health and WebMD share the following home remedies that can relieve you from the painful UTI:

1.  Drink plenty of water.

To remove the infection-causing bacteria from your body you have to drink plenty of water, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Infections (NIDDK). This may also change some of your body's normal defense mechanism.

Holly Lucille, ND, RN, a naturopathic doctor said that you must drink water up to 80 ounces (oz.) a day. If you are 140 pounds in weight, you must get about 70 oz. of water each day.

2.  Apply a heating pad.

UTI's symptoms include inflammation and pain around the pubic area. Kandis Rivers, MD, a urologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan said that you apply a heating pad on the affected area to relieve the pain. Do not apply directly to the skin and keep the heat low. To avoid your skin from burning, limit the use for 15 minutes.

3.  Empty your bladder.

To empty your bladder you have to urinate always. This removes the infection-causing bacteria.

4.  Eat plenty of foods that are rich in Vitamin C.

Vitamin C makes the urine more acidic hence, prevents the development of bacteria in your urinary tract. Dr. Rivers advises those who have UTI to eat foods that contain vitamin C or take vitamin C supplements.

5. Avoid foods that can trigger your UTI.

Stay away from foods and drinks such as alcohol, carbonated drinks, artificial sweetener, caffeine, nicotine and spicy food. These can irritate your bladder. Eat instead foods that are high-fiber carbohydrates.

6.  Change your lifestyle.

There are some things you need to change so that your UTI will improve and so as not to get the infection. These include quitting smoking, cleaning your body from front to back, wearing loose cotton underwear and clothing and having personal hygiene products with no fragrant smell.
