Baby Born to a Brain Dead Mother Survives, Delivered by C-Section

A baby born to a brain dead mother was delivered by c-section, survives and is considered to be healthy, according to the Daily Mail.

The baby's mother suffered a stroke while she was 15 weeks pregnant and several tests revealed that she was brain dead. However, the physicians also confirmed that the fetus inside her womb was healthy, Doctors advised the family of the mother to keep the life support running until the 27th week to ensure that the baby inside the womb would survive.

Despite weighing only three pounds, the baby was delivered by C section and the mother's life support was turned off two days after. "In the first two days we struggled to save the mother's life and it was proven that circulation and functions stopped," said Dr. Bela Fulesdi, president of the University of Debrecen Medical and Health Science Center.

"On the second day, when other examinations were carried out, we found the baby was alive and kicking well in its mother's body." Family members of the baby, specifically the baby's grandmother and father visited the baby frequently and rubbed the mother's stomach to stimulate interaction. A music therapist was also hired to help stimulate the fetus.

The mother, who was kept alive for 92 days, was in a state that made it possible for her organs to be donated. Her heart, pancreas, liver and two kidneys were transplanted to four patients, according to France24. The family from Hungary has requested that their privacy be respected so their names and identification have not been disclosed. The baby's sex was also kept confidential by the family. Last month, they baby was discharged from the hospital and is now developing at home while being closely monitored by doctors.
