Adventurous Vacation Ideas: Ways Families With Special Needs Children Can Enjoy

Parents often think that it would impossible to go on vacation with their kids, much more if they have special needs children. However, there are various ways families of special needs can have an adventurous vacation.

Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of places that your child with special needs can enjoy. Admittedly, it may be hard to organize a family trip, especially with a special need child but it can actually be managed.

You'd be surprised how much fun it would turn out. So don't let your special circumstance hold you back from enjoying this summer. Taken from Parents and Family Vacation Critic, consider these destinations in your next adventure trip:

Morgan's Wonderland, San Antonio, Texas

Inspired by his daughter, Gordon Hartman built a 25-acre oasis along the country's northeast side where all forms of adventure, from carousel to off-road adventure, can be enjoyed by both special needs children and adults. Morgan's Wonderland opened four years ago when philanthropist Hartman witnessed how his daughter with special needs yearned to play with other kids.

However, she doesn't have the communication skills to ask. Hartman traveled around the country seeking advice from professionals and experts in kids with special needs. Morgan's Wonderland is a place specially built for special needs kids where they can enjoy with other special needs and normal kids. The park brings everyone together.

Shared Adventures, Santa Cruz, California

While California is a popular summer destination, it is also a great destination for special needs kids. Shared Adventures is a non-profit organization that offers extraordinary summer programs that your kids with special needs can enjoy.

Every July, it hosts an annual Day on the Beach, where special needs kids can enjoy adaptive or assisted kayaking, canoe rides, scuba diving and floatation. The organization has events all throughout the year.

Splore, Moab, Utah

In partnership with Red Cliffs Lodge, Splore organizes outdoor activities such as river trips, rock climbing and hiking for special needs children. Splore is a non-profit program in Moab that offers affordable accommodations and activities for special needs family. Your kids with special needs can also enjoy four-wheeling, river riding, horseback riding and mountain biking, which are all adapted for special needs, just 10-minutes away from the lodge.

Smugglers' Notch, Jeffersonville, Vermont

Impressive adaptive programs for kids with special needs are offered by the resort. Your kid may be assigned to a trained camp counselor and be a part of swimming, hiking and rock wall climbing, depending on the need.

They can also enjoy arts and crafts or can be a part of a special-needs group. They also offer private swimming lessons. If your child is a little older, they can be a part of Autism Mountain Camp which offers horseback riding and sailing.
