Raising Kids & Fighting Terrorism: How to Make Your Children Aware of Their Surroundings

Terrorist attacks have been happening here and there and everyone is so alarmed with what might happen next, especially the parents. Today, parents are keen to keep their children safe by raising their kids while fighting terrorism.

Raising a child and fighting terrorism have something in common as the parent is also struggling to keep their children's safety. According to SheKnows, a parent can forget everything and quickly go to panic particularly if there's a threat of danger.

Discuss The Dangers

Juliette Kayyem, the author of "Security Mom," an ex-adviser at Homeland Security and CNN analyst, said parents think their children already know what to do in case of a terror attack without even explaining the scenario to them. Hence, the Pulitzer Prize finalist is openly talking about the dangers and threats of terror attacks to her children.

Kayyem shared that children must be aware of what's happening to their surrounding so they could be prepared in case of an attack. In fact, she is advising her kids to escape and run if ever a shooter is around.

It's Not Just Bad News

Parents reported making children aware of terrorism is far different from tackling bad news. Kids might understand national calamities to happen but, a terror attack will come as a surprise. As these children are still innocent on the real happenings of the world, it is now important to tell them the "terrorist acts."

How To Do It

Parents have to make things simple for the kids to understand. Anything that the guardians will tell the children must be appropriate with their age and understanding. Moreover, kids might be surprised and scared once they become aware of what's happening to their surroundings.

Parents should assure their children they will be safe by giving them the right knowledge and information. They, too, ought to ask their children how they feel about the situation and give them security. The terrorist attack comes without warning, so parents must teach their children to be alert anytime.
