Mental Health Awareness: Cara Delevingne Reveals Breakdown, 'Suicide Squad' Star Voluntary Spokesperson For Psychological Disorder

Cara Delevingne took a break from being an A-list international supermodel and opened up about experiencing psychological disorder. The "Suicide Squad" star, in fact, wants to use her own story as Delevingne becomes a voluntary spokesperson for raising mental health awareness.

E! News reports that Delevingne chose to be open about her own mental health struggle because all too often, individuals who suffer from psychological disorders go unnoticed and therefore do not receive the support they need. Delevingne is currently battling with depression and has been struggling with this mental health condition even during the height of her career as a supermodel.

"Mental illness goes unseen, but hopefully I don't want it to be unheard," Delevingne said. "I want to speak up for it."

New York Times reports that mental health is gaining global attention. In fact, Tim Evans, who is the World Bank Group senior director of health, nutrition and population, said that groups are working on bringing mental health as part of the priority list in health services. Dr. Shekhar Saxena of the World Health Organization pointed out that mental health disorders account for 30 percent of total disability costs currently.

Delevingne stated that she hopes her own openness will encourage others who need mental health support, or who have loved ones and friends who have psychological disorders, to open up. The "Suicide Squad" actress revealed that aside from herself, a few people in her life also struggle with mental health issues. Delevingne stated that talking about their mental health condition, or those of their loved ones, is a big step for people in addressing the issue.

According to Evening Standard, Delevingne opened up to Rupert Everett about pushing herself until she eventually had a mental breakdown. Delevingne revealed that she even became suicidal and did not see the point of going on. The "Suicide Squad" star felt alone.

Delevingne explained that someone going through a mental breakdown understands that loving family and friends are just an arm's reach away. The "Suicide Squad" actress said that a person with mental health issues may even be grateful for these family and friends. However, Delevingne pointed out that this is not enough for a person who has a psychological disorder.

The supermodel clarified that she is not done with the fashion industry. Neither does Delevingne blame the fashion industry for her breakdown. The "Suicide Squad" actress is simply taking a break while Delevingne focuses on other interests, such as acting and music. Delevingne will soon be seen in "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie" and "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets."
