US President Barack Obama's Daughter, Malia, To Attend Harvard In 2017

The 17-year-old daughter of US President Barack Obama will attend Harvard University a year after graduating from high school. The eldest child of America's leader is expected to enroll in the prestigious institution by 2017.

Malia Obama Goes To Harvard

Citing a statement made by first lady Michelle Obama, CBS New York said Malia will go to Harvard by fall next year and will be a member of Class 2021. "Malia will take a gap year before beginning school," the statement furthered.

It was explained in the same report that Harvard University would usually encourage students to take a one-year break for them to travel, work or engage in a special project or work. They are, however, prohibited from enrolling for a degree at another college.

The New York Times said the US President and his wife also attended Harvard University when they studied law. The first daughter has reportedly visited the university in Cambridge, Massachusetts and other Ivy League schools last March.

School Plans For The Obama Kids

A trip of the US President with Malia to California started rumors that Obama's daughter will go to Stanford University, in spite of the White House's refusal to comment on where Malia Obama will study. According to CNN, the US President expressed the plan of his family to stay in Washington two years after his term ends to allow their youngest daughter, Sasha, to finish her high school.

"Our decision has actually presented a bit of a dilemma because traditionally presidents don't stick around after they're done." President Barack Obama said during the White House Correspondents' Dinner over the weekend. "And it's something that I've been brooding about a little bit."

Other Presidential Daughters

Malia is another presidential daughter who made a decision about her college plans while her father is still in office. CNN said Bill Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, started studying in Stanford University, three years before her father left the Oval Office.
