'Two-headed baby' born in India actually conjoined twins

A woman living in India has given birth to conjoined twins who, at first glance, appear to be a two-headed baby, The Independent reports.

According to the news organization, the mother, 28, was unable to afford an ultrasound. As a result, the condition was only identified two weeks before the twins were born via caesarean section.

Doctors say the babies, who have separate spinal cords and necks, are unlikely to survive given that they share overworked vital organs.

"The parents are very distressed and we are helping the family the best we can," said Doctor Shikha Malik, who delivered the twins.

"We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then," Malik told the Daily Mail.

The couple have one other daughter.

"Now the baby is born we will do our best to save her and we hope to operate once her condition is more stable," Malik added.

The twins are receiving treatment at Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital's intensive unit located in Sonipat, Haryana.
