Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin splitting up, coin term "consciously uncouple"

Gywneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are splitting up after a decade of marriage.

The estranged couple, who share two children together, Apple, 9, and Moses, 7, confirmed rumors that they have been struggling to save their message for the past year.

In a joint statement they released Tuesday night, Paltrow and Martin said they had finally decided to end their marriage but that they still love each other very much.

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," they wrote. "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been."

The "Shakespeare in Love" star, 41, and Coldplay frontman, 37, also said in the statement that above anything else, they are parents to both of their children and asked for their space and privacy to be respected at this challenging time.

"We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."

Paltrow and Martin first met in 2002 just a few weeks after the former's father passed away. They were married the following year.

Last year, Paltrow admitted things weren't always smooth sailing between her and her husband, telling Glamour magazine, "It's hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We're the same as any couple."
