Pregnancy Tips: Giving In to Your Food Cravings Can Cause Excess in Gestational Weight Gain

Most women experience food cravings during pregnancy, some prefer sweets, others salty ones. But should you give in to your cravings? A recent study suggests it might be a bad idea.

Excess Gestational Weight Gain

A study published on Appetite journal, per NCBI, found a preliminary evidence on the role of food cravings in excess gestational weight gain (GWG) among pregnant women, which is linked to health complications both in mothers and their babies. The results show that giving in to food cravings and consuming craved foods may increase the risk of GWG.

Pregnant Women's Food Cravings

About half of American women say they have cravings for certain kinds of foods when they are pregnant. While many people believe it is because of huge hormonal changes during this period, the truth is no one really knows, BabyCenter said citing Elizabeth Somer, author of "Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy." Some nutritionists and healthcare experts believe food craving is a signal of what the body is lacking. For instance, someone who is craving for chocolate may be needing magnesium. However, current studies are not yet enough to prove this association.

Fret not though because it doesn't mean that you can't give in to your cravings once in a while, especially if you want the healthy ones. "Most cravings and aversions are more interesting than serious and, for the most part, can be indulged in moderation," according to Somer. "A healthful diet is one that meets your nutritional and your emotional needs as well as your preferences."

To deal with your cravings, BabyCenter suggests that you eat breakfast every day. Also ensure that you get proper exercise and that you have enough emotional support from your family and friends.
