When Do We Know That Our Kids Are Ready To Write?

Your preschooler learning to write implies an exciting but challenging days of their growth. This article will tell you when would be the best time for you to consider that your children is ready to begin writing.

The New Age Parents Magazine, gave some tips on how you can find out on your own when your toddler is ready to scribble on and legibly write with a pen and paper. Here's how:

It begins with some scribble and doodles.

Children who are from 2-4 years old are the usual ones to do this. They would use their palmer grasp when doodling on the paper of board.

Palmer grasp for little kids such as this age is normal. This will give the kid total control of the pen that he or she is holding.

When this happens try to provide your child with a vertical or inclined surface to write on. This way they can begin practicing their writing ability even before they begin school.

Continued writing.

Kids who start schooling will not be required to write more often than they used to. It is best to coach your child at home to switch from the palmer grasp to the tripod grasp.

Tripod grasp is the clasping of the pen using ones thumb, index finger and middle finger. Kids in between 28-39 months old would switch to tripod grasp from the palmer grasp. When you see your child trying, you can help by coaching them and modelling the way you would hold a pen in your hard. Sooner or later they will be able to get it and continue on their own as they grow.

Is there right or wrong way to write?

One might think this is not such a big deal. It may be the child is still adjusting to the skill and when he finally gets comfortable writing he'll be confident enough in doing it. Kids who love to write and draw will switch to it comfortably when ready.

However parents should still observe their kids closely as some writing behaviors may indicate that the child could be needing special attention. Parents.com also have some tips for parents in helping thier kids write.
