Gender Equality Is Now An Issue In Film Journalism, New Study Claims

The film industry is dominated by the male population according to a new study and it is something that a lot of people are seeing unfair. It is not only filmmakers who are mostly male these days, but also the critics of this said industry.

In an article published by Screen Crush, they pointed out how gender equality is an issue in a billion dollar industry like film. Even Meryl Streep said that this is now an obvious issue that everyone should look at since even journalism is being affected by gender inequality. It is a big thing because it would make a lot of things bias in delivering information and news is not supposed to be that way, including criticism. Film critics should still find a way to make their judgments and criteria fair and equal according to the standards of art and its delivery to the public.

A recent study shows 73% of film critics who handle Rotten Tomatoes are men and only 27% are women. Variety reported this number and it is quite alarming because this doesn't include other companies that handle this area of journalism.

This is just a perfect example of the reality that is going on in the film industry. Meanwhile, some would say that this is not exactly a bad thing because most critics are focused on giving praises and opinion to female lead actors.

In a way, one could see the balance in there, but it still would be better if the opportunities are equal or seen for both male and female to have their strong voice in this area of art.
