MMA News: UFC Lightweight Champ Calls Out Conor McGregor

After the events of UFC 202, Conor McGregor once again solidified himself as the king of the Ultimate Fighting Championship with a win against his bitter rival Nate Diaz in a 5 round classic. Now, another UFC fighter wants a shot against McGregor as Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez calls out "The Notorious One."

Despite the performance of Conor McGregor in winning what many are calling the fight of the year in UFC 202, some people in the mixed martial arts world were still unimpressed with the Irishman, including the reigning UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

In an interview with Anik and Florian via MMA Fighting, Alvarez said that McGregor wasn't a champion caliber fighter, and that he can't and won't be able to go past 3 rounds in a 5-round championship fight, adding that he (Alvarez) has fought opponents way above McGregor's standards.

McGregor has been pressured by UFC President Dana White to return to the featherweight division to defend his title against interim champion Jose Aldo following his win against Nate Diaz. However, the featherweight champion, along with his coaches and team, are reluctant to accept Aldo's challenge, due to the fact that their last fight for the title ended in 13 seconds with the Brazilian, Aldo, being knocked out. McGregor was also unimpressed with Aldo's last bout against Chad Mendes for the interim featherweight belt.

UFC President Dana White likewise thought that a McGregor - Alvarez super fight, where both champions would square off seemed pretty interesting, saying that there are plenty of fun fights at both the featherweight and lightweight divisions, according to The 42.

The UFC is poised to make history once again as the first mixed martial arts promotion to take place in the famed Madison Square Garden arena in New York City for UFC 205. Many fighters have been eyeing the opportunity to fight in "The Garden," as it deems to be one of the UFC's most high profile events, including Alvarez, who would want to have a big money fight against McGregor there.
