Mother's Day Gift Guide: What Moms Really Want Does Not Cost a Thing

On Sunday, mothers get all the gifts their hearts desire on their special day. However, these gifts may not be as important to moms as much as the kids think.

Survey results revealed that Canadians, for one, do not feel the urgent need to buy moms presents for Mother's Day, according to Huffington Post Canada. Results revealed that four out of five Canadians feel no sense of urgency in buying gifts for their moms on Sunday.

The reason for this phenomenon?

"Most of us love our mom, but Canadians clearly don't love or buy into the commercial aspects of Mother's Day," Chris Herlihey from IPG Mediabrands stated in a press release.

However, Herlihey was quick to add that "[it] is not to say that people don't appreciate their mothers or recognize the importance of celebrating the day in some way."

Moms would prefer to be given sufficient time just to be alone on Mother's Day, as revealed by an article recently published in Theglobeandmail.com.

"That's what every mom wants," Amy Corkett, a mom of two from Calgary, shared her sentiments about alone time on Mother's Day. "Just to have a break and to be yourself again without having to be mom."

So, what is the best Mother's Day present for Corkett?

"The weekend after Mother's Day I would get to go to a local hotel, check in for the day, and just read and drink coffee. And have a full night's sleep," she revealed.

Not all moms want alone time as a present this Sunday, though. A mom from Toronto does not want her family to feel neglected on Moms Day.

"It comes down to mom guilt," Renee Kaiman said. "And because Mother's Day is such a Hallmark holiday, society makes you feel like you need to be in the middle and doing things [with your family]."

The mom of two added, "If I could be very selfish, it would be spending time just with my kids and my family and then doing something for me alone."

A combination of mother pampering and responsibilities go a long way in making mothers happy on Sunday. Spare your mom from cleaning the house. To maximize time for the big celebration on Sunday, clean the house on Saturday for her. Subsequently, good bonding moments with mom over lunch or dinner take place on Sunday.

Flowers don't cost a fortune either. Plus, these do their share in making moms feel valued more than any other presents. According to Time.com, "flowers" is looked up more frequently online on mid-May than Valentine's Day.
