‘Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale’ New & Updates: New Trailer, Character Designs Releases

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming feature-length entry in Reki Kawahara's "Sword Art Online" franchise, "Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale," showcasing the brand new "Ordinal Scale" game that Kirito will take part in along with the film's new characters.

The "Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale" trailer was shared on the official Aniplex US YouTube channel, beginning by showing how Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya is noting about how augmented reality is now becoming much more commonplace in the franchise' world. The promotional video then included some snippets of the augmented reality technology in the film, which will make use of the fictional Augma system.

Through this Augma device, players can take part in a newly hyped up augmented reality game called "Ordinal Scale." Similar to the VRMMOs "Sword Art Online" and "Gun Gale Online, the titular video game in "Sword Art Online: The Movie: Ordinal Scale" will place Kirito and his friends in a fantasy world with where they can take part in quests and gain power.

In contrast to the other games in the "Sword Art Online" series, "Ordinal Scale" features a system wherein each player's stats and attributes are governed by an ordinal number with higher ranking players having a massive advantage over lower ranking players. Presumably, this is what will be one of the main points of the conflict in "Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale."

The trailer also showed the new faces coming into the "Sword Art Online" franchise. "Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale" will introduce Yuna, labeled as "the diva of 'Ordinal Scale'," Eiji, the top 2 ranked player in "Ordinal Scale," and the Augma developer Dr. Shigemura. Character designs for all the newbies were shared by Crunchyroll.

"Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale" will feature a brand new plot written by Reki Kawahara himself for the movie that will take place after the events of the second season of the "Sword Art Online" anime. The movie will arrive to Japanese theaters on Feb. 17 next year.
