Parenting Tips: Know Which Parenting Style Causes Anxiety And Depression

It's already been established that there is no right or wrong was when it comes to parenting. Studies reveal, however, that there are some parenting styles that triggers anxiety and depression among children.

Parenting styles may vary from one family to another but some parenting pattern can possibly lead to anxiety and depression among school-aged children. One of the parenting styles that is being questioned is the authoritative parenting.

Authoritative parenting is imposed through punishment, which implied that the child should abide by the rules so that they won't be punished. It may seem ideal as children are being well disciplined as they fear the consequences. Unfortunately, it was revealed that this parenting style can cause anxiety.

Parenting Science explained that children who grew up with authoritative parenting may be well disciplined but that are less resourceful with low social skills and are prone to depression. Children raised out of authoritative parenting may not only develop anxiety, some are even motivated to be rebellious.

Michael Liebowitz, M.D., noted that aside from authoritative parenting, over-protectiveness is also lethal for a child's mental health. Being over protective triggers anxiety among school-aged children, which can be challenging to address.

Overprotective parenting, which involves being too invasive and helpful as a parent can do more harm than good as well. Health Central reports that being too emotionally available for your child can highly affect his decision-making skills and weakens their independence.

Children should be given the freedom to regulate their emotions for them to be able to tackle day to day challenged as they'd reach adulthood. It was then mentioned that children who are given the freedom to work on their emotions and have it regulated are less prone to suffer from depression and anxiety compared to the those who are emotionally attached to their parents
