Halloween Candy & Treats: Parents Watch Out For These Tricky Candy Ingredients, Top Recommendations From A Dietitian

As traditions go, indulging in Halloween candy and treats is part of the fun of celebrating the event. Yet dentists and dietitians are likely to persuade parents to go easy on giving these sugary stuff to children.

It's no secret that Halloween candy and treats are packed with sugar and other synthetic ingredients that can cause tooth decay and sugar rush, or trigger allergies and long term health problems. Before parents let their children indulge this Halloween, know what tricky candy ingredients to avoid and what treats are better choices, as recommended by Orlando Health registered dietitian Lauren Popeck.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common sweetener that can be likened to table sugar. It is usually found in flavored drinks and processed foods like Halloween candy and treats. Eaten in large amounts, HFCS can lead to weight gain or obesity. It can also trigger allergies in some kids, according to Live Strong. Thus, it's better to eat foods with HFCS in moderation, if not completely avoid it.

Artificial flavors and coloring in candies can lead to hyperactivity in kids, according to Health Family Magazine. It has also been linked to ADHD and could trigger asthma allergies. Parents need to read the Halloween candy and treats labels properly before giving these to kids to temper down hyperactivity and other triggers. Check for names like Yellow 5 or Blue 42 in the ingredients.

Trans fat is also present in Halloween candy and treats. This can acerbate the LDL, otherwise known as the bad cholesterol, which could lead to heart diseases. In candy ingredients, trans fat is usually labeled as hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Candies with artificial sweeteners aren't automatically healthier. It can still trigger weight gain, diabetes and heart and metabolism problems, according to Medical Daily. Thus, parents need to avoid Halloween candy and treats labeled as "sugar-free" or "low-carb."

For Lauren Popeck, there are still good choices of Halloween candy and treats that can be easily bought at grocery stores. These are Hershey's Symphony and Special Dark candy bar - no HFCS, Kit Kats - no trans fat, Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Candy Bars - no artificial flavors and coloring, and Theo Organic & Fair Trade Peanut Butter Cups - no artificial sweeteners.
