'Code Black' Season 2 Cancellation Looms? Medical Drama Ratings Drop, Cast Saying Goodbye To Tommy Dewey?

"Code Black" Season 2 on CBS is hitting series lows in the ratings in the past weeks. Speculations are that the network could eventually pull the plug on the medical drama when this season is done.

It doesn't help that the show is also in the midst of changing its cast by removing and adding new faces. The latest cast notice is the addition of a neurosurgeon on "Code Black" that hints of Dr. Mike Leighton's (Tommy Dewey) fate.

TV By The Numbers reports that "Code Black" was especially affected by the World Series games. It hit a series low more than once and the projection has now been downgraded to unlikely getting a renewal for Season 3.

The stability of "Code Black's" numbers was in the bubble to begin with in the first season. Its second season premiere last September also slipped in the ratings, The Wrap reports.

The show might still be reeling from the changes and revamps its creative team introduced in "Code Black" Season 2 with the cast changes. Yet the show is still adding another cast member with actor Jay Harrington, whose character arrives at a crucial time.

Deadline reports that Jay Harrington will play a neurosurgeon who will be operating on one of the show's characters. Based on the teaser posted on the show's official Facebook page, loyal fans already have an inkling on who is involved.

Dr. Mike Leighton has been in a coma since the premiere of "Code Black" Season 2 and the arrival of the neurosurgeon brings bad news. Harry Ford -- who plays Dr. Angus Leighton, the brother of Dr. Mike -- told Hidden Remote that he struggled with the thought of his TV brother dying. "I reached out to [executive producer] Michael [Seitzman] and was like, please tell me you're not going to kill him and he was like I can't make any promises," Ford said.

Despite the performance in the ratings, viewers of "Code Black" have been embracing Season 2's storylines and cast changes. The show has received an average rating of 7.8 over 10 among nearly 5,000 votes on IMDb.

"Code Black" airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on CBS. Check out the teaser to this week's episode below.
