Can Marijuana Stop Opioid Related Deaths Across The United States?

Opioid-related deaths continually increase all throughout the United States and it was reported that it drastically increased since 2015. With the death toll continually increasing, it was mentioned that medical marijuana can possibly pave a way in providing treatment for opioid addiction.

Opioid-related death causes continually reaches alarming heights and it was mentioned that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention labels opioid consumption as an epidemic as it continues to reach alarming heights. Dr. Tom Frieden of the CDC shared his thoughts in regards to the alarming numbers of opioid-related deaths that's affecting the United States.

"The epidemic of deaths involving opioids continues to worse," Dr. Frieden stated. Prescription opioid misuse and use of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl are intertwined and deeply troubling problems."

CNN reports that in 2015, around 9.580 fatalities opioid-related fatalities took place, and 73 percent of the statics were affiliated to death. Michael Bitticelli, director of the National Drug Control Policy pointed out that one of the main reasons being pointed out in the rampant illicit drug consumption is the lack of awareness and treatment facilities.

"The prescription opioid and heroin epidemic continues to devastate communities and families across the country - in large part because too many people still do not get effective substance use disorder treatment," Bitticelli, stated during an interview.

The looming plague of opioid epidemic, however, can be placed into halt after it was reported that marijuana consumption can potentially end the epidemic. Time mentioned that a research took place where it was mentioned that medical marijuana consumption can potentially end the opioid epidemic.

Statistics revealed that opioid and painkiller prescription drastically dropped after medical marijuana legalization took place. The report published in the Health Affairs explained that medical marijuana effectively replaced prescription.

"What we hope people take away from this is that when marijuana becomes available as a clinical option, physicians and patients together are reacting as if marijuana is medicine," Ashley Bradford stated.
