Parenting Inside Out: Parenting Education In The Justice System

The child and family development programs of Community Action Team (CAT) are now introducing the Parenting Education Programs. Parenting Inside Out in the jail is the brainchild of and developed by Oregon Social Learning Center. Parent Education is intended for those parents who are on parole probation and corrections inmates. The parent education will offer a 2.5-hour, 10-week evidenced based curriculum. This undeniably helpful program will indeed help improve family relationships at the same time reducing recidivism and also assist in improving post-release criminal behavior as well as facilitate the reduction of substance abuse.

The Child and Development Programs of Community Action Team (CAT) in collaboration with Columbia County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Justice, are now entering the Parent Education Programs. This is deliberately designed to provide certain inmates a one in a million opportunity to continue parenting while serving their sentence.

The parenting education is a program built for those individuals who are one parole probation and corrections inmates. The parent educator provides a 2.5-hour, 10-week, evidenced based curriculum in the jail according to an article in The Chronicle.

Since there are over 5 million American children who have had at least one parent in prison, Child Trends stated that children living outside metropolitan areas are highly usually to undergo parent incarceration compared to children who are living in metropolitan areas according to an article on Northwest Family Services.

According to Julianne Cullen, Northwest Parenting Coordinator for CAT, this program desires to create a community designed to foster and sustain peer accountability both inside and outside of jail confinement by teaching transferable parenting skills, child development knowledge, communication and problem-solving skills through classroom practice. This program will also help in improving post-release criminal behavior, facilitate the reduction of substance abuse and improved family relationships.
