How Katherine Heigl Told Her Adopted Daughters They Will Be Big Sisters

Actress Katherine Heigl recently welcomed her third baby and first biological child with husband Josh Kelley. Joshua Bishop, Jr., now 5-week-old, is the little brother to two girls, Naleigh, 8, and Adalaide, 4, who are the couple's adopted kids.

The actress, 38, revealed to People  she and her husband didn't announce they were having another child until the 12th week of her pregnancy. Their daughters first learned they were going to be big sisters from their grandmother, Nancy, Heigl's mom, but what followed next left a lasting remark on the actress and the girls.

"[The news] was a little confusing for the girls because they'd be like, "I grew in your tummy?'" the actress said. "I had to explain, 'Well, you didn't actually grow in my tummy, but your dad and I are your parents,'" the actress added.

The couple adopted their daughters in 2009 (Naleigh) and 2012 (Adalaide). When the second baby came, Heigl told Us Weekly having biological kids is still on the table. "But we decided to adopt first," the actress said.

Heigl is aware that girls will someday come to that age when they will start to wonder why they look different from their parents or each other. Naleigh has Asian features, whose roots are from South Korea, while Adalaide, who was adopted from Louisiana, has dark skin and curly hair. The "Doubt" star said twhen the time comes and her girls would want to learn more about their heritage, she will be supportive of it.

Heigl grew up becoming very aware of adoption because her big sister, Meg, was also adopted. Heigl's mom always reminded her "it doesn't matter how they come into your life" since they are already part of the family.

Meanwhile, Heigl also revealed in a separate People interview that she's experiencing postpartum "highs and lows" after giving birth to her son. She's not complaining, however. She said experiencing the joys and pains of pregnancy after having two adoptions is "magical."
