The Two Most Stressful Things to Move

For many of us, just the idea of having to pack up all your belongings and move to a new city can be super overwhelming. Unfortunately moving is something we all have to do at one point or another in our lives. Anxiety and moving go hand in hand for a reason, not only is the entire moving process a rather tedious and complicated affair, but also because of the emotional connections and sentimentality you may have with your old home.

However difficult moving is, there are some aspects of moving that are more stressful than others. I always search for movers near me when I am considering a move because packing and transporting your belongings can be one less thing to worry about if you hire local professionals to take care of it for you. Especially when you are moving with kids, any help is better than none at all. Still, some particular items are more difficult to pack and move. Here are two things that cause most stress during a move and some tips on how to handle them.

Refrigerator

I personally hate moving a fridge. It is large, bulky, heavy, and not easy to move. Additionally, it needs to be emptied and cleaned before and after the move because of how quickly it can get moldy during transit. Plus the risk of damaging its mechanism during the rough handling of the move is also rather high. Finally, because of its sheer bulk and weight, it can easily damage walls and other items while moving. To move a fridge, you have to take some precautionary measures that will prevent harm by taking the following factors in consideration before attempting to move it:

  • Will it fit through the doors in the new place? It might be prudent to get the measurements beforehand, or ask the realtor to send them to you. Keep in mind that the doors are not the only space the fridge has to move through. Also measure the elevator, stairwell, corridors and corners in advance.

  • Do you have the right moving equipment? It is easier to move a fridge if you have a dolly, moving pads, furniture blankets, straps, and a few strong friends or movers.

  • Is it prepared and packed properly? You must empty the fridge and remove any drawers, shelves, or loose add-ons that may fall out during the move. Dismantle whatever possible and secure doors and drawers with stretch tape. Be extra careful about any glass fixtures.

Grand Piano (or a Baby Grand)

Musical instruments can also be extremely difficult things to move. Music instruments that have their own special carrying cases, like guitars, are relatively easier to move as they are protected well, however if you have to move a drum kit or a grand piano, it is suddenly far more stressful. Also, adding the delicate internal mechanism of a piano, it is no less than a nightmare.

Not only are these things very difficult to lift and carry, they are shaped oddly and the chances of damaging them during the move is very high. Think of the size and whether it will fit through the doors, elevator, stairwell, corridors and corners. You would also need specialized equipment to move a grand piano. The best way to move them is by hiring movers who specialize in moving pianos and other such equipment.
