78% of US adults report having a home with a lawn and/or landscaping, with 94% saying that they've used lawn/landscaping services in that past year, according to a survey conducted by Harris Poll. However, for those wishing to landscape their lawn on their own, deciding what to do can be frustrating, especially when attempting to make it as family-friendly as possible. From planning ahead to maintaining a healthy balance through lawn care, here's what you need to know.

Planning ahead

Planning ahead is the most simple and effective way to ensure that your lawn is family-friendly, and should encompass a few key elements of landscaping, including the design layout and what you bring into the space. For example, if you're planning to plant flowers in your lawn, ensuring that they're non-toxic and planted away from the children's toys is necessary for creating a safe and well though-out space for children to play.

Additional planning should also focus on where the kids' toys will fit in, as equipment like swing sets, a pool, and a sandbox can take up a lot of space and interfere with landscaping elements like flowers, plants, and other lawn décor. If you're short on space, one solution to keep your lawn and garden looking great while maintaining a kid-friendly atmosphere is to incorporate a treehouse. Not only will this give your children their own space, but it will help preserve your lawn and gardening areas as well. However, if you do choose to have the on-ground play equipment, then maintaining a healthy balance in terms of your lawn is imperative if you are to keep things in order.

A healthy balance

Maintaining a healthy balance is also necessary in order to create the perfect family-friendly garden, and can be done in a few simple ways. One way to execute this is by rotating the major toys now and then, particularly heavy items like an above ground swimming pool or sandbox, as they're known for altering the grass and leaving unsightly patches of dead vegetation. However, if you already have these patches of dying grass, reviving it is as simple as seeding the lawn and regularly watering it to bring it back to life. If you have a pool, installing a French drain system is another way to keep the lawn looking great while still catering to the kids, as it will help combat a muddy lawn caused by excessive pool-water splashing.

Having both a good-looking lawn and space for the children to play can seem nearly impossible, but there are many ways to have the best of both worlds. From taking time to design the best layout to maintaining your lawn, you'll have the perfect family-friendly backyard in no time at all.
