It seems like only yesterday you were bringing your baby home from the hospital. Now, that cute baby is a full-fledged toddler who has outgrown their nursery, and it's time for you to redecorate. When it comes to making your child's room age appropriate now that they're out of the baby stage, you need to think towards the future.

Create a Safe Haven

Your child's room should be their safe haven. It's a place where they play, rest and grow. Their room needs to accommodate their growth while letting their budding personality shine through. If you plan on staying in your current home, redecorating now needs to set the time for the future. As your child gets older, their tastes will change, so you want to choose colors that can transition with them. Regardless of gender, neutral colors are always a good choice. They can be updated easily and come in a variety of shades that suits everyone's taste. If you choose a neutral color, you can still let child's current favorites be part of their room by using peelable wallpaper or removable wall art. You can also choose themed pieces.

Furniture and Storage

In addition to paint, you also need to think about furniture and storage options. Choose pieces that transition well through each stage of your child's growth. As your child gets older, they'll spend more time alone in their room. Make sure they have they appropriate storage for school supplies, clothes and electronics. You also need to consider a desk that grows with them. It needs to be sturdy enough to hold schoolbooks and computers, yet small enough so as not overwhelm the room. And even it's too early to think about sleepovers, it's still a good idea to create a comfortable space for guests.

Renovations

If your child's current room is too small to accommodate them as they grow, remodeling is a good option. If your home allows for it, you can add an addition to your home or find another way to make their current room larger. One way to accomplish this is with a line of home equity credit. Depending on what you've paid into your home, you can use these funds to make renovations. Reviewing a guide on home equity can give you a better idea of how home equity line of credit work. If used correctly, it will not break the monthly budget and you might even have some left over for other home renovation projects. Your focus should be only using as much as you really need and not overspending.

Don't Forget to Accessorize

Letting your little one choose they favorite mementos and wall art is the first steps towards autonomy. Give them the green light to choose their favorite pieces and arrange them however they please in their room. Even though they're still small, this will help shape their identity. Keep in mind that since they're still not old enough to make their own decisions, you may still need to step in and help them out a bit.
