Building a New Mom Skincare Routine

Becoming a new mom is definitely a huge step in anyone's life, even if you have the best of help, the best baby ever, or have been a mom before. Finding the time to take care of your skin may seem impossible, especially when you are struggling to even get enough sleep, but it does not have to be. Here is an easy new mom skin routine that can help you work some self-care into your baby time.

Cleanser

Always start with a great cleanser. Cleansing your face should never be a skincare step that you skip, no matter how busy you are. Look for a cleanser that does double duty for your face, like cleansing and exfoliating or cleansing and cell renewal. Do double duty for yourself and find a natural, paraben-free cleanser that works great for you and use it every day. When you are feeling the stress of a new baby, your skincare routine can help you get back to center.

Exfoliate

You are probably already well aware of how hormones wreak havoc on your body during a pregnancy, but they can wreak havoc with your skin health, as well. A great exfoliator with alpha-hydroxy acid can help get your skin back to normal while your hormones stabilize, including reducing gray and brown patches that may have appeared during your pregnancy.

Hydrating serum

A good hydrating serum reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and also helps bring a dewy glow to your skin. Long, sleepless nights and your body working overtime can cause your skin to look dry, dull, and listless. A hydrating serum may seem like an unnecessary step if you already use a lotion or cream, but serums may end up with more active ingredients reaching your skin than other products.

Moisturizer

Finding the right moisturizer for your skin can take some trial and error, but we recommend looking for a great anti aging skin care moisturizer that is not too heavy on your skin. Which moisturizer you use should depend largely upon your skin type and whether you have oily or dry skin. Certain moisturizers can even help dissolve oil and clean your pores.

Eye Masks

If you are a new mom, there is no way you are getting enough sleep, and what is one of the tell-tale signs of not getting enough sleep? Eye baggage. The hero of this story is eye masks, which can do in twenty minutes what the best lotions can take weeks to accomplish. Instantly reduce dark under-eye bags, puffy eyes, and dark circles.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen likely was not part of your mom's daily skin routine, but it definitely should be a part of yours. One of the biggest contributors to wrinkles and fine lines on the face can be sun exposure and damage. Many moisturizers have a sunscreen built-in, but if not make sure you are using a high-rated, broad-spectrum sunscreen for your delicate facial skin.

BB or CC Cream

Even if you do not want to take the time for a full makeup regimen, a BB or CC cream can even out your skin and give you a fresh, bright, well-cared for look. These creams are lighter than full foundations but provide a good tint and can even come with built-in sunscreen properties. The best BB or CC cream can make it seem as if you took the time for a full makeup workup instead of just a few minutes of self-care.

Need a Refresher?

If you find yourself in the middle of a long day and no drive (or care) to touch up like you may usually do, invest in a good face mist. With soothing ingredients like witch hazel and cucumber, a facial mist can give you a burst of rejuvenation in just a few spritzes. The bonus is the dewy glow your face will achieve immediately, giving the allusion of just-woken-up beauty.

Whether this is your first child or your fourth, taking care of yourself while you are caring for your infant should always be a high priority. A simple skincare routine can give you some structure in an otherwise unpredictable and seemingly never-ending phase. Happy mom-ing!
