A court has sentenced the Mapson sisters from Oklahoma to 60 months and 120 months in prison after they were found guilty of plotting to kill a child's dad and his new wife.

The child's dad was the ex-partner of Tierzah Mapson, 29, who tricked him into meeting up halfway in Alabama over their custody arrangement. Instead, the father and his wife, based in Florida, were ambushed while waiting at the meet-up place.

According to the New York Daily News, the ambush happened in June 2018. The father and his wife waited for Tierzah to arrive with the child, but she texted to say they would be running a little late because the child was sick and vomiting.

After 20 minutes of her text, the father and his wife were gunned down. They attempted to take shelter inside a store. He sustained a gunshot to his shoulder, and the bullet was lodged in his chest. Fortunately, he was taken to a hospital in Tuscaloosa, where doctors assessed that his wounds were non-life-threatening.

Mapson Sisters Were Near the Scene of the Ambush

Tierzah and her ex-partner had a child in 2013 and lived in North Carolina. After their divorce, Tierzah moved back to Oklahoma while her ex headed south to Florida, where he met and married his second wife.

According to The Fresno Bee, the mother was granted primary custody of their child while the father had a visitation schedule that could be modified between the exes. The child was passed between parents for some time, but the arrangement was apparently no longer working well for Tierzah.

She wanted to change the terms of the custody and thought that killing the father and his new wife was the solution. So, she conspired with her sisters to carry out a plan. Investigators told the court that the Mapson sisters prepared elaborately, including disguising Tierzah's Ford pickup truck.

On the day of the ambush, investigators said that a Ford pickup truck was seen near the scene before disappearing past a church and the woods. They also found a to-do list of the murder plot on Tierzah's phone and a schedule of when they will carry out the kill. The Mapson sisters also had more than 150 calls and texts with each other on the day of the crime.

Indicted, Arrest, and Conviction of the Mapson Sisters

While it initially looked like a random shooting, the investigators were able to pierce what happened. The Mapson sisters were indicted by August, but their arrest didn't happen until September 2019 as the sisters evaded the authorities. They were convicted in June 2021 and then sentenced Wednesday, April 6, 2022.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Tierzah will be staying in prison for 60 months, while her sisters got 120 months each because they were the ones who fired the shots. Though they could not pinpoint the trigger person, the investigators knew that Charis served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years and was a skilled marksman.
