While Anne Heche remained in critical condition days following her car crash, her eldest son took the lead in ensuring that his mother had the best medical care. The actress, 53, died a week after the incident, leaving two sons, Homer Laffoon, 20, and Atlas Tucker, 13.

According to Entertainment Tonight, her sons have been surrounded by family and friends as they waited for Heche to wake up from her coma.

On August 5, the actress crashed her car into a house in the Mar Vista community in Los Angeles. More than 60 firefighters came to the rescue as Heche's Mini Cooper ignited in a blaze that went out of control. The actress was rushed to the hospital while the family who occupied the house had to be relocated.

Sources said that Heche had to be ventilated and undergo surgery for her burns. Laffoon, as the eldest, tried to be strong and focused given the many legal decisions he had to make so that his mother would get better or if she continued to be unresponsive.

On August 12, Heche's family decided to take her off life support as she was not expected to survive due to a "severe anoxic brain injury." Sources also said that the actress' condition has not improved since she was rushed to the hospital. Witness Lynne Bernstein described Heche's crash as horrific and said she could hardly breathe and see when she tried to help the actress out of her car.

While left in a "deep world of sadness," Heche's son said his mom was now "free from pain" as she journeys through eternal life.

Who are Anne Heche's children?

Laffoon is her son with ex-husband, real estate broker Coley Laffoon, while she shared Atlas Tupper, 13, with her ex-partner, actor James Tupper.

Though Heche kept her kids out of the public eye, they had joined their mother in some public appearances like movie premieres and other Hollywood events. The boys were also frequently seen on their mother's Instagram account, reflecting their bond and closeness.

According to Nicki Swift, Heche fought hard to gain custody of her boys. At one point, Coley accused Heche of poor parenting while criticizing her ex-husband in public interviews. Eventually, however, Heche and Coley reached an agreement on Homer's custody.

Heche and James, who were together for ten years, also had a bitter custody battle. He suggested that their problems could be linked to her drug use. James, however, has been one of the people who have openly asked for prayers for Heche. The actor dedicated a post to his ex on his Instagram.

Anne Heche's felony investigation and organ donation

Meanwhile, before her death, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) elevated Heche's car crash as a felony DUI investigation from a misdemeanor DUI. Officer Annie Hernandez told CNN that the blood test results from the actress indicated the presence of narcotics. However, further tests are needed to rule out the possibility that these may have been medications given at the hospital.

The LAPD also stated that they elevated the case because of an injury from one of the victims, Lynne Mishele, who has been given medical attention and could be "psychologically traumatized" as she lost everything in the fire. However, Detective Olin Osborne said these were just findings in preliminary investigations, and nothing had been ascertained and confirmed.

Following her death, Heche's organs will be donated as her family said this was her choice to be an organ donor long ago. The actress was known for movies like "Six Days, Seven Nights," "Wag the Dog," and "Donnie Brasco.
