Lumia 950, 950XL Smartphones Unveiled, 'The Most Productive Phone' Ever [Release Date, Specs & Price]

Microsoft has unveiled two new flagship smartphones, the Lumia 950 and 950XL, and aims to put Windows 10 in everyone's pocket through it.

Redmond based tech giant Microsoft has unveiled two new smartphones, the Lumia 950 and 950XL.

Both flagship phones, according to Engadget, are equipped with features that give Microsoft a good comeback: the 950 comes with a 5.2-inch display and a hexa-core Qualcomm 808 processor; while the 950XL comes with an octa-core Qualcomm 810 chipset.

These, and other beefed-up features, according to NBC news, are just part of the detailed presentation given by Microsoft. What takes the cake is how the smartphones are able to work with Windows 10.

"Full Windows 10 is coming to the phone...this means Office…this means it's supposed to be the most productive phone you've ever seen," said Panos Panay, Microsoft executive, at the launch event held in New York City.

The new phones have the ability to connect to laptops and other devices via a special dock. And by using Windows 10's “universal apps,” Lumia 950 and 950XL users can start working on their phone, and easily continue working on a laptop when needed.

"We want to put Windows in your pocket," said Panay as per Cnet. Panay leads the development of all of Windows premium devices.

"These phones really do start to act like a PC."

The phones also enjoy two key features of Windows 10: Windows Hello and Continuum. Windows Hello enables users to unlock their phones using their fingerprint or a face scan. Continuum, on the other hand, configures Windows 10 based on the device that a user is currently using.

Continuum, according to Engadget, enables users to turn the phone into mini-computers. At the demo, the phone was connected to a display, and the pre-loaded universal apps that were on the phone continued on the screens. Very convenient.

Apart from the connectivity and universality conveniences that the new phones have, they both have a 20-megapixel rear camera that, according to Panay, is “unbelievable in low light.” Both also have optical stabilization technology, and can shoot ultra-high-definition 4K video.

The new devices come with a USB type-C charging port that enables quick charging, and are equipped with dual antennas to boost signal reception.

The devices are priced at $549 for the Lumia 950, and $649 for the Lumia 950XL. Both will be available this November.

For those who want a Windows phone but are on a tight budget, Microsoft also announced that it will release a lower-priced Lumia 550, at $139.
