'Doctor Strange' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Says Fatherhood Made Him A Better Hamlet

Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife, Sophie Hunter, welcomed their son in June this year. Among the many things having a new baby brings to a family, the actor said that having his son made him a better Hamlet.

Cumberbatch is currently starring in the Shakespeare drama staged at the London's Barbican theater and it will run until the end of October, according to the official site. Playing Hamlet after having his boy gave him new insights to the role.

"I've just become a father and I used to think you have to be childless to be a Hamlet," the actor said on the "South Bank Show" according to The Telegraph. "I thought that it may be a difficult ingredient to play with but it's miraculous - as I'm sure you know being a dad - that your thinking about how you were parented shoots up as well," he added.

Going on stage every night since "Hamlet" opened, Benedict said that as soon as his work is done, he switches off character. "I drop it all very, very quickly because I have to eat and sleep. That's honestly the truth. And get home, to a newborn," he said in the interview.

But while "Hamlet" is keeping him busy these days, the actor still makes it a point to get quality time with his other half and their baby. Over the weekend, Benedict and Sophie attended the BFI London Film Festival, where "Black Mass," his film with Johnny Depp, was being screened. The two appeared to have only eyes for each other at the red carpet, according to Mirror.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch's next big project is the adaptation of the Marvel classic "Doctor Strange," which has a November 2016 theater date set, according to Marvel. The specifics of the movie's plot have not been divulged just yet, but according Tilda Swinton, who will play The Ancient one in the movie, she expects it will be bit different form the comic books.

"I'm a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I'm really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what's done in this particular world. It's all about creativity. It's not about everything exploding at the end. It's about something very different," she said, according to Screen Crush.

Aside from Cumberbatch and Swinton, actress Rachel McAdams also confirmed that she will be part of the movie, according to her video interview on The Wrap.
