The victim, 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, was found dead after going for a jog in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick, displaying visible injuries.

Riley, a student at the Augusta University College of Nursing's Athens campus, was not enrolled at the University of Georgia but had previously attended another institution in Athens.

The occurrence has notified an active homicide inspection. Police Force, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department, is helping on the case.

Meanwhile, a hefty police existence was reported near an apartment close to Lake Herrick. The University of Georgia has interrupted classes, giving counseling support services for the concerned campus community.

Safety concerns have arisen among the student body, especially around Lake Herrick, a usually busy area on campus.

Students are suggesting increased security measures, such as reinstating emergency call boxes, following the removal of the system in 2004.

Some have expressed discomfort and a reevaluation of personal safety practices in the wake of the recent events.

In spite of the existence of security cameras on the 760-acre campus, this grievous event marks the first homicide on the University of Georgia campus in at least two decades.

Classes have been interrupted, and the campus community is dealing with the scare and hardship caused by these frightening occurrences.

University of Georgia Schedules a Press Conference

A person suspected of entanglement in the killing of a student from Augusta University College of Nursing on the University of Georgia (UGA) campus has been captured by campus police, as reported by UGA.

The university reassures there is no ongoing hazard to the campus related to this occurrence. A press conference is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET to bring in more details.

The victim, Laken Riley, was discovered dead after jogging on the UGA campus, initiating a thorough investigation.

Riley, a junior on the dean's list, was previously a UGA student until 2023. The cause of death is pending examination. Classes were canceled, and two communities mourn as authorities continue their investigation.

Another UGA student's "sudden death" occurred the night before, labeled as a death investigation/suicide with no signs of foul play.

The university acknowledges the challenging circumstances and urges anyone with information to contact the UGA Police Department.
