'28 Days Later' Release Date: Alex Garland Confirms Sequel Under Development, Says A Weird Idea 'Popped into My Head'

Alex Garland, author of “28 Days Later,” has confirmed that a sequel titled “28 Months Later” will be coming to finish the trilogy.

Garland revealed in an interview with IndieWire that he wasn't invested in the idea of a trilogy that 28 Days Later started, followed by 28 Weeks Later.

"The rights to 28 Days were frozen, effectively, because they were shared between Danny [Boyle], [producer] Andrew [McDonald] and myself, and Fox," he said.

Garland reportedly didn't write the second movie, 28 Weeks. He was only an executive producer, and wasn't interested in another sequel coming up. He explained further that none of the people involved in the making of the film were interested in finishing the trilogy, which meant that the third installment was “floating.”

"After the second one, none of us really wanted to do another,” explained the writer. “Fox may or may not have, I don't know."

However, although he isn't a big fan of sequels, making sequels comes naturally to him.

“Sequels are generally done in a rush. It's done with a sense of urgency,” Garland explained in the interview. “The first movie, you spend a long time developing to get it over the line. The second thing, you don't. Your expectations are different and your motivations are different.”

Garland has confirmed that a third installment is coming. He revealed that, while talking of collaborating with Boyle for Trainspotting 2, an idea came 'popped' into his head, inspiring him to write 28 Months.

"About two years ago, Danny started collaborating on the potential to makeTrainspotting 2, another sequel," he said, as per Enstarz. "In that conversation, an idea for 28 Months arrived. I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head.”

“Partly because of a trip I'd taken. I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew and Danny, but I also said I don't want to work on it,” Garland explained. “I don't really want to play a role, and Andrew said, 'Leave it to me.' So he's gone off and is working on it."

Garland didn't give some details away, but knowing that the film is underway will be good news for fans of the franchise, and the zombie genre in general.

Currently, no dates have been announced, so fans, keep tuned in for more updates.
