'Sherlock' Season 4 Air Date, Premiere & Trailer: Creator Says 'Doctor Who' Crossover Never Happening, 'Over My Dead Body'

It's been a long two years since fans saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) grace the small screen. There have also been a lot of fan theories about the possibility of "Sherlock" having a mash-up with "Doctor Who," given that Mark Gatiss has a hand on the two hit TV series. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gatiss puts an end to the speculation.

Speaking with the news outlet, "Sherlock" co-creator and "Doctor Who" writer said that a crossover between the two shows will happen "over my dead body."

“I’m not being horrible but I just don’t see the point,” said Gatiss.

In the interview with Sara Vilkomerson of Entertainment Weekly during Comic-Con, "Sherlock" co-creator and "Doctor Who" lead writer, Steven Moffat. said that he's up for the challenge of a mash-up, and even though it has been discussed this past summer, the idea is being "pushed back" as some of the shows' collaborators are not too invested in the idea.

“I work with boring people on both shows,” joked Moffat. “I’d do it, ‘cause it’d be funny. It’d just be a laugh. But the rest of them, frankly, the grownups -- ‘No, you can have too much sugar.’”

Meanwhile, Gatiss explained to the news outlet why it is impossible for the two shows to cross over.

“First of all, they are entirely different shows. But I think there’d be so much excitement among certain members of the fan community followed by massive disappointment that it wasn’t the version they had in their heads," Gatiss said.

"And, just personally, I’ve never been [a] fan of these kind of mash-ups," he added.

Meanwhile, even though we wouldn't see the eccentric detective and Time Lord in one frame, fans of the two series can still catch their favorite characters this holiday season. Parent Herald previously reported that after two long years, "Sherlock" fans will again see Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock Holmes in the show's Victorian-themed special. Titled "The Abominable Bride," the holiday special will air on New Year, Jan. 1, 2016 via BBC One and select theaters.

On the other hand, the Christmas for "Doctor Who" will bring River Song back to the series. Titled "The Husbands of River Song," Moffat revealed to an interview with Radio Times that fascination with River Song and how he decided to write it for the holiday special.

"I brought River Song back in because I thought there’s a possibility I’d never write it [Doctor Who] again so that’ll be my goodbye," he revealed. "The Husbands of River Song" will air on Christmas Day.
