'Sherlock' Season 4 Air Date, Premiere & Trailer: Steven Moffat Reveals New Season Will Be ‘Hilarious’, ‘Bloody Frightening’; Mark Gatiss Finishes Season’s First Episode

Several fans of the popular TV series "Sherlock" are now itching to get some fresh details about the forthcoming new season. It has been two years already since the third season of the show was aired.

New reports swirling online claimed that the "Sherlock" season 4 will start filming in 2016 and will be aired later next year. Also, the show's creative team has confirmed that the script of season 4 has already been completed.

"I just finished [writing] episode 1," "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss, who is also a regular writer on BBC's science-fiction television program "Doctor Who" and portrays as the banker Tycho Nestoris on HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones," divulged in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

IDigitalTimes shared that the upcoming season will answer the unending question why and how Moriarty, portrayed by "Spectre" star Andrew Scott, was able to return in season 3 after he died in season 2.  "All I can say is, this is a major, life-changing series for the regulars," Mark added. "The repercussions of Moriarty's apparent return are far-reaching. It's very big stuff."

Meanwhile, Steven Mofatt revealed to Digital Spy last September that "Sherlock" season 4 will start filming in Spring 2016. However, he was unsure if the production will have to put in a halt between episodes due to Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch's hectic schedules. Moreover, he was not sure at that time if  three stories will be shot in an uninterrupted block.

The Scottish television writer and producer also hinted that "Sherlock" season could make several fans desperate. "Hmmm... desperate for series 5. We're certainly going to put them through the mill. It's going to be more of an emotional upheaval," he said when asked how fans would feel after watching it. "Hopefully enjoyable and fun, all the things Sherlock must always be. It will be tough at times. Maybe that's the word? A tougher series."
