5 Ways to Teach Your Kid That Quitting Isn't the Answer

As a parent, you would not want to see your child give up on something so easily especially if it is something you know they can excel at. Luckily, there are multiple ways to convince your child that quitting is not the only way to overcome the difficulties life has presented.

Experts have said that quitting does not actually come naturally; rather it is something that a person learns throughout their lifetime. So if quitting rather than perseverance were instilled in a child's mentality, they would more often than not quit on something when the going gets tough.

The first tip to teach children not to quit is to find out why they want to quit in the first place. This is extremely important according to Mark Papadas' "10 Secrets to Empower Kids and Awaken the Child in You." They say that parents should not force their children to become what they wanted to become when they were kids. Rather parents should focus on what their kids want. So if a parent is forcing something against their child's will, this often results in them despising that and quitting.

According to Yahoo! Parenting, another tip is to focus on what positive thing your child can get from not quitting. If they could potentially learn a new, important life skill or become more physically fit, this could potentially spur them on to persevere in what they are doing and not quit.

It is also important for a child to associate their failures with their successes. They should see failures as more of lessons and analyze what they have learned from the times they have failed. This teaches them that the road to success will always be littered with a couple of failures here and there.

Parents should also be careful with the language they use when it comes to talking about failure. An article on Yahoo! Parenting sums this up as "Words have meaning, but you and your kids have the power to redefine your personal meaning of words like failure to make them empowering rather than hurtful."

Today Parenting also says that parents should always lead by example. If children should learn not to quit then their parents should do the exact same thing.
