5 Ways To Get Your Dog Ready For Your Baby

Dogs typically get confused when the tiniest and newest member of the family suddenly comes in.  Here are ways to help smoothen the introduction between your dog and baby:

1.     Claim your baby's scent

Bring home an item that contains's your baby's scent such as a burp cloth. Challenge your dog by letting him sniff the item from a distance to let him know that the item is yours to be respected.

2.     Buy your dog supplies that he will need

While preparing for a baby means a ton of shopping, you would also need to have appropriate equipment for your dog as well. A fixed length lead of 4 to 6 feet long is recommended by Pet MD, to be used to tether your dog as needed instead of a retractable leash.

Your child will not be using baby gates right away but it would be a good idea to establish boundaries early on. Baby cribs and beds should also have bolsters in case your dog decides to lean on them.

Purchasing a ton of treat-stuffable rubber toys will keep your dog busy when you can't pay attention to him. Giving him a toy will be a great way to keep him occupied.

3.     Start stroller training

The size and movement of a stroller might frighten some small, or even bigger dogs, so it will take time for your dog to get used to it. Introduce him to the stroller by letting him sniff it, according to Positively.

Once he's properly associated with the stroller, start walking your dog alongside the stroller while giving his treats along the way. Take your time as dogs may need some getting used to walking beside a hefty piece of equipment.

4.     Reward proper behavior around babies

Dogs will get curious about the newest member of the family so he will certainly try to get close to investigate the little one. Praise and reward appropriate behavior such as backing off or sitting politely when told to do so.

5.     Be aware of your energy

Remember that dogs mirror their owners' behavior. If you feel anxious or worried when the new baby comes in, your dog will certainly feel the same way towards the tiny little human.
