'X-Men: Apocalypse' Cast, Plot and Update: Wolverine's Future Uncertain When Hugh Jackman Leaves X-Men Behind

Beginning with "X-Men" to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" onto "The Wolverine" and most recently on "X-Men: Days of Future Past," Hugh Jackman has appeared in a total of seven films as Wolverine. For over 15 years, Jackman is the only actor "X-Men" followers have associated with Wolverine.

To date, Jackman has appeared in every "X-Men" film that has been made. Comic Book Resources reports, however, that Jackman's appearance as Wolverine in "X-Men:Apocalypse" remains unconfirmed. Digital Spy points out that Jackman himself said that his next and final appearance as an X-Men is in "Wolverine 3." An interview with "X-Men:Apocalypse" director Bryan Singer produced a very slim sliver of hope.

"I can't talk about that," Singer replied when asked about Wolverine's role in the instalment. Whether it's a full blown role or a cameo, if it does happen, remains to be seen.

Producer Simon Kinberg and Singer are united in one thing, that Hugh Jackman is irreplaceable as Wolverine. "I do think you would want to figure out how to tell more Wolverine stories," Kinberg said.

"So either we would try to entice Hugh to come back and eat more chicken and work out for a few months, or we would have to figure out a creative way to move forward," he added. "Honestly, I can't imagine anybody else playing the part, and there's not too many characters I can say that for."

Still, while Wolverine in "X-men: Apocalypse" is still a hazy thing, Jackman confirmed to Collider that the script for "Wolverine 3" is almost done.  "We have a script," Jackman said.

"A full script. To tell you, two days ago I got that the full finished-well, it's not finished, but we're getting super close-as you can see by the rate of my facial hair," the actor added. "That might give you a good clue that perhaps... yeah, it's sooner rather than later."

According to The Independent, Jackman has but one requirement for the "Wolverine 3" script to be a go. "My thing and I've told you and I've told everyone, it's my last one, for me I want it to be perfect, so the moment I know it's perfect, bang, we'll go," Jackman explained.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will open in theaters on May 27, 2016 and "Wolverine 3" can be expected on March 3, 2017.
