‘Star Wars’ News: Mark Hamill Speaks About Luke Skywalker's Homosexuality

"Star Wars" was recently steeped in diversity issues with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams at the forefront. According to Abrams, diversity in "Star Wars" should also be shown by including homosexual characters in the franchise.

Abrams' statement resulted to speculations on whether or not this diversity is present in already existing characters in "Star Wars," particularly in "Star Wars" The Force Awakens." Fans even paired up Finn (John Boyega) with Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). The theories were mostly based on the immediate and close friendship between the characters of Boyega and Isaac.

However, the roles that Boyega and Isaac in "Star Wars" may not be the only possible gender-diversified angle in the story. New characters and other existing characters may also be selected to exemplify gender diversity in the next instalments of "Star Wars."

New York Daily News reports that Mark Hamill spoke up on behalf of his iconic "Star Wars" character Luke Skywalker. Hamill said that Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars" has a sexual orientation that is best left to the audience's interpretation.

The Sun says that according to Hamill, if the audience sees Luke Skywalker as a homosexual character, then Luke Skywalker is a homosexual. This is despite Luke Skywalker having a wife and a child in the "Star Wars" books and comics. This is also despite Luke Skywalker trying to win Princess Leia's affections in the earlier "Star Wars" films before he found out that she is his sister.

"Star Wars" fans who saw "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have been theorizing that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is actually the lost daughter of Luke Skywalker. Whether or not Luke Skywalker will branch out with a different gender preference than traditionally depicted is yet to be confirmed. Certainly, Luke Skywalker is expected to take on a very significant role in thd next installment of "Star Wars."

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will be released in theaters on December 16, 2016, "Star Wars" Episode 8 on December 15, 2017 and the "Star Wars" Anthology on Han Solo on May 25, 2018. "Star Wars" Episode 9 will be released in 2019.
