'The Mummy' Release Date, News & Update: Annabelle Wallis to Join Tom Cruise in Remake Film

Annabelle Wallis is under negotiation to join Tom Cruise in the upcoming reboot of "The Mummy." Anabelle Wallis is about to play a major role in the action-adventure horror film if the talks pursue.

A source of The Hollywood Reporter said that Annabelle Wallis will play the role of a scientist while Tom Cruise will be a Special Forces soldier or an ex-serviceman. "Kingsman: The Secret Service" star Sofia Boutella will play as the main villain in "The Mummy" remake.

Universal Studios plans to create a "cinematic universe" that interconnects its homegrown horror films. "The Mummy" will be the first film to kick it off this year.

"The Mummy" will be directed by Alex Kurtzman. He, too, is going to produce "The Mummy" with Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel while Jon Spaihts will pen the movie.

Also, Alex Kurtzman confirmed that "The Mummy" and the other remake of Universal Monster films will stay in the horror genre. This is in spite of Universal Chief Donna Langley's earlier comment that the company is planning to put an action-adventure spin to the film, according to Slash Film.

"I think there was some lost in translation quality to the way it was received because I promise you there will be horror in these movies," Kurtzman said. He added that the most difficult part of doing a classic horror movie, like "The Mummy," is mixing terror part with action, adventure or suspense while still sticking to its original genre.

"The Mummy" is set to be released on June 9, 2017. Universal Studios is also eyeing to recreate the "Wolf Man," which is scheduled to hit the theaters on March 30, 2018. "Van Helsing," "Bride of Frankenstein" and "Invisible Man" are to follow.
