5 More Ways to Help During Autism Action Month

This month, we are called to take actions in different ways as April is World's Autism Awareness Month. Aside from the donating, there are so many ways to get involve in Autism Action Month.

More than anything, it creates a big impact if you immerse yourself in the situation. According to Age of Autism, 1 in 68 children is diagnosed with a life-altering disorder that may affect their communication and social skills.

Recently, Autism groups have asked for aggressive involvement instead of simple awareness. Taken from Age of Autism and Ezon Pro, we give you five more other ways you can participate in this year's Autism Action Month.

1. Get to know a family affected by autism and volunteer your time.

Get to know a family affected by autism in your community. Volunteer your time for them. It would be such a relief to take a step back from all the responsibilities once in a while. Raising a child with autism, ordinary days can be very difficult.

However, if you wish to volunteer your time, it is important to learn what needs to be done and the routine of the child. Also, learn the different triggers, and the medium they use for communication. If this is too much for you, offer anything that can help the family: run errands, do yard work or house cleaning.

2. Read and be aware. Then Donate.

Find out what books, movies, or magazines, families use to learn about autism. You may then offer to pay for a year's subscription for the family or give them a gift card so they can continue to educate themselves. You may also send a copy of the books, movies, and magazines to your local library or university library.

3.  Donate equipment to a family.

Aside from educational materials, you may want to find out what equipment the child needs. This can range from a communication device, therapy swing or chewies. If you cannot afford to donate for the needed equipment, you may also organize a fundraiser.

4. Join local autism events.

The Autism Society Affiliate Network has representatives in almost every state. You may sign up to volunteer as the whole month will be filled with different with activities. Check out the  Autism Society Affiliate Map to ask how you can participate in the local events.

5. Donate to a specific family.

Before you give away your hard-earned money, ask where the money can best go to. If you know someone from your community, you may donate the money specifically for them. It's great to know where your money is going to.
