US Students Prefers College Education Overseas

There are more and more people from the United States going to other countries to get a college degree. One of the main reasons for this is the cost of education in America.

Learning English reported that for 2010 to 2012 the Institute of International Education noted a 5 percent increase n the number of students taking up college course in Western Europe. It added that there were more than 46,000 US students who enrolled in 14 different countries from 2011 to 2012.

Some of the most common destinations for these learners were the United Kingdom and Canada. Other students also prefer to take courses in other English-speaking countries like France and Germany.

Among these students is American resident Hunter Bliss who opted to get a physics degree in Germany. He explained that the rising cost of education in his country forced him to make the decision.

Bliss told BBC that he did not want his mom to spend more than $10,000 a year if he goes to the University of South Carolina, which is located in his hometown. He claimed that he was able to convince his mother to send him to journey because of the cost.

According to Learning English, universities in Germany do not charge their students with tuition fees. The country is also known for offering English courses to students.

New York resident Casey Detrow said in an NPR report that she is studying for free at the Humboldt University in Berlin. "I really cannot even compare that to what I would be getting in the United States. When you are talking free versus $50,000, I feel like there is no contest. I can't justify going back," she added.

Aside from the high cost of education, Learning English also said that students are leaving the US because international exposure has been deemed vital in the job market. Studying in other countries make students more competitive when they graduate and apply for jobs.
