Teenage Pregnancy Is No Laughing Matter, MTV Told

Many people thought that the joke pulled about teenage pregnancy during the MTV Movie Awards last Sunday was not funny at all. Netizens took to social media to express their disappointment on the act.

According to New York Magazine, four actresses auditioning for the MTV series "16 and Pregnant," came out on stage during the awards night dressed as pregnant teens, one even sporting a prison uniform and handcuffs. They appeared just as Anna Kendrick told Zac Efron and Adam DeVine that she found dates for them.

"I scoured every dating site available - Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, JDate, Craigslist, Angie's List - to find Adam and Zac a couple of dates for tonight's show," Kendrick said. "Let's bring out our lucky girls!"

When the girls came out, they immediate told the audience that they were there for a different purpose. "We're here to audition for 16 and Pregnant," the actresses said. Kendrick, however, realized that they were not the girls she was expecting though she still pushed both boys to date them.

Twitter user Nick Liddle said that he was not happy with the joke during the awards night. "We're here to audition for 16 and pregnant" sorry @MTV that wasn't funny :( #MTVMovieAwards," Liddle tweeted. Other Twitter users agreed that making fun of teenage pregnancy while there are a lot of individuals undergoing that stage is very disrespectful.

Huffington Post said MTV should have known better in making a joke about the topic since they have been running "16 and Pregnant" for almost seven years now. It noted that the channel has been able to deal with various teenagers dealing with the struggles that come with early pregnancy.

The show's official website says that it tackles various issues and challenges faced by pregnant teenagers like adoption. gossip, religion and marriage. "Faced with incredibly adult decisions, these girls are forced to sacrifice their teenage years and their high school experiences," the show's description further read.
