5 Ways To Lower The Risk For Colon Cancer

The terrible disease of colon cancer occurs when abnormal cells start to form in the large intestine. Aside from the foolproof ways of proper diet, exercise, and no alcohol and smoking, here are five ways to lower the risk for colon cancer.

1. Eat Less Red Meat

Research suggests that a high intake of red meat increases the risk factor for colon cancer. One particular study found that adults who consumed an average of 5 ounces of red meat per day had an increased risk of colon cancer by 24 percent.

Eating too much red meat such as pork, steak or hamburgers are more likely to increase the risk for colon cancer. Experts suggest eating no more than three servings per week with less being better.

2. Drink Milk

Consuming milk regularly offers a modest yet protective effect against colon cancer. About 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium per day can protect against colon cancer. Since consuming the right amount of calcium from milk alone daily may be difficult for some to achieve, supplements would be a great compensation.

3. Avoid Food With Sodium Nitrite

Processed meats filled with sodium nitrate such as bacon, hotdogs, salami and sausages are worst to add to a diet. When sodium nitrate is combined with stomach acids during digestion, it can produce nitrosamine which known to be a carcinogen. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats are the best ways to lower the risk for colon cancer.

4. Consume A Multivitamin With Folate

Multivitamins that contain folate are known to lower the risk of colon cancer based on numerous studies. However, mega-dose vitamins are not recommended, as standard multivitamins are adequate.

5. Get Screened

Getting regular screening for colon cancer is probably the most important tool to lower the risk of developing the disease. The American Cancer Society recommends regular screening to people by the age of 50.

Early screening can spot and remove the abnormal growth of tissue, known as polyps, which can lead to colon cancer. Screening can also help catch the cancer during its early stages to be able to provide early lifesaving treatments for colon cancer.
