Slut-Shaming: Serious Type Of Bullying On Girls

Teenage girls are going through a lot of emotional changes. This is the stage where they become too sensitive with social issues in their life. There is a known serious issue of bullying in teenage girls which can lead to suicide. The term is slut-shaming.

What Is It?

Slut-shaming is a more specific kind of bullying on girls where they are criticized because of presumed sexual activities. This can happen everywhere, even at home. As posted by Parents.com, there were numerous cases of slut-shaming that has led to suicide in the past few years.

The word slut slowly sinks into most young girls in their early teenage years who are in the stage of discovering the real world. According to experts, this is because of the influence of media showing popular celebrities who are termed to be sexy.

Interesting Study

According to Livescience, a study published in the Journal Sex Roles revealed that even 6-year-old girls want to look sexy. The study involved 60 young girls ages 6 to 9 who were given a choice to dress themselves following one of the two dolls that were dressed differently. One doll wore a revealing dress while the other doll wore a trendy but more conservative dress.

The researchers were surprised when 70 percent of the young girls chose to be like the doll who wore a more revealing dress because they say it's more popular compared to the other doll. Media exposure has likely contributed to this behavior because where there are a lot of exposures of sexy stars that young girls idolize.

Parents' Role

Slut-shaming is a serious type of bullying and parents need to be informed about this. Proper parenting should be applied to prevent your young daughters from experiencing painful and shameful bullying about sexuality.

Bustle advised parents that children, even at a young age, should be educated about sex openly and honestly. Talking to your child about sexuality can have a positive effect when they grow up. They become more aware and more informed about the topic.

The best thing a parent can also do is practice some preventive steps for their daughter not to be called a slut. Advice your daughters to wear a decent and conservative clothes rather than revealing ones and make the term "virginity" holy for them.
