Artificial Intelligence News & Update: Google's AI Can Now Write Haunting Poetry

Artificial Intelligence has proven to be fully capable of doing what human beings can do. Now Google has discovered that their AI has a new talent in writing haunting post-modern poetry.

Why Is Google's AI Writing Poetry?

Google had previously encountered a problem with the artificial intelligence having a rather concise diction. Although the AI had precise grammar, the Google Brain Team wanted it to be more conversational in its interactions. This is when Google decided to make the artificial intelligence read 2,865 romance novels so it could learn to interact in a more casual tone (via Android Authority).

The Google Brain Team wrote about the results of the AI's romance novel binge in an unpublished paper titled "Generating Sentences from a Continuous Space." The team tested the artificial intelligence by giving it a starting and ending sentence. The AI was then instructed to connect the two statements with the use of 13 sentences.

The AI's Poem

The test proved that the artificial intelligence can tell a story using a rather poetic tone that it had learned from the romance novels it read. An excerpt of the AI's poetry is listed below (via Android Authority).

there is no one else in sight.
they were the only ones who mattered.
they were the only ones left.
he had to be with me.
she had to be with him.
i had to do this.
i wanted to kill him.
i started to cry.
i turned to him."

Does The AI Know It Is Writing Poetry?

Although Google's test had proved that artificial intelligence can write a story when given a beginning and an end, there is no proof that the AI knows that it is writing poetry. The Google Brain Team has also stated that they will continue working with the artificial intelligence to ensure that it will be able to interact with humans with a more conversational tone.
