"The Blacklist" Season 3 finale confirmed rumors about Megan Boone's return in the NBC police procedural as Liz Keen. The shocking season finale showed that Liz was still alive and has only faked her death.

The implications of Liz's return and the reasons behind her faking her own death will be explored in "The Blacklist" Season 4. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath revealed that Liz's lie will affect Tom and Red in a very serious way.

According to the showrunner, Red (James Spader) will feel "devastated" to learn that Liz opted to lie to him, but he will somehow understand why she was compelled to do so. On the other hand, things might no longer sit so well for Liz and Tom (Ryan Eggold) in "The Blacklist" Season 4.

"There was a real relationship at the core of a couple who had every reason to ultimately fall apart, because it was based on so many untruths," said Eisendrath.

The showrunner noted that the audience will be able to relate to Tom and Liz's struggles in "The Blacklist" Season 4. While Tom and Liz may not be able to survive their challenges together as a couple, James Spader recently shared that his character will remain the same for Liz, reports TV Series Finale.

Spader said that Red will continue to understand Liz and will continue to patiently wait for her in "The Blacklist" Season 4.

"The Blacklist" Season 4 returns this fall on NBC.
