Reality Star Angela Simmons Breaks No-Sex-Before-Marriage Belief; Receives Backlash After Confirming Pregnancy

Pregnancy news and rumors among celebrities are nothing new these days and have somehow become a norm particularly when there's an announcement of an engagement. Angela Simmons, the daughter of rap legend Rev. Run, is not exempted and has recently been an item in this issue. But what makes it a bit different for the fashion designer is that negative comments abound more than the congratulatory messages.

'I Was Saving Myself For Marriage'

Angela, 28, starred in the reality docuseries featuring her family back in 2005, "Run's House." And one of the notable things about her personality was her stand on having no sex until she gets married. As a teenager, she had a strong stance on keeping her virginity and saving herself for marriage. And so when she announced her pregnancy this week, she was called so many names like a liar, a hypocrite, and a thot.

Screwed Culture

How people reacted and backlashed Angela Simmons shows a "screwed up" culture on how women, who decided to give their virginity before walking down the aisle, are treated, Demetria Lucas D'Oyley of The Root said.

"Sex between consensual adults is not dirty, and there's nothing shameful about it. But there's something really weird about the way we treat virgins, whether it's young girls headed to prom or grown women who give into entirely natural urges that the vast majority of adults act on," D'Oyley wrote.

The author added that the case of Angela shows how people these days can't have healthy conversations when it comes to sex and sexuality. There are ideals attached to women to avoid sex, which could be ridiculous, and their virginity is actually being policed. On the contrary, men are treated the opposite, as if sex is just a normal thing to expect from them and virginity is never an issue.

Angela Simmons announced her engagement in April, and after weeks of speculations, she confirmed her pregnancy by posting a photo of her baby bump on Instagram. She captioned it, "We are overjoyed and super excited to receive a blessing this big! Starting a family was something that I could have only dreamed of."
