When Microsoft initially entered the console market, it first wanted to have a partnership with Sony and Nintendo. It planned to launch the ultimate game console if the other companies agreed, but the idea didn't obviously pan out.

Microsoft was said to have proposed that it will develop the software for the game console with Sony and Nintendo making the hardware. But the latter companies didn't sign on to the idea. Hence, Microsoft went ahead to develop its first Xbox console. This happened in 2001 and the three major players competed and divided the gaming market since then.

This merger was a rumor that went on for many years, which was finally confirmed as the truth by Ed Fries, who was one of the original creators of the first Xbox. PlayStation Lifestyle reports that it was Bill Gates who talked to Sony for Microsoft, after discussions with Nintendo failed. The rumors about the merger that almost happened surfaced again after it was reported that Microsoft had planned on buying Nintendo. But Fries denied this was the case, per Gamespot.
