Is Rihanna's New Single the Only Saving Grace of the New "Star Trek: Beyond" Trailer?

A lot of people have been clamoring to see new content related to the upcoming sci-fi film "Star Trek: Beyond." Luckily, for them a new trailer has dropped, but it does not show much of what the fans have been looking for ever since the last film in the franchise was released a couple of years ago. Despite its lack of content, the song featured in the trailer is definitely something fans will be talking about.

The song featured in the trailer is Rihanna's new single "Sledgehammer." Although we do not know whether this will cause Rihanna fans to see the upcoming "Star Trek" film, we can almost be certain that people who were introduced to the popstar's music because of the trailer will be checking much more of her material out. Wired reports that even though much of the footage from the trailer has pretty much been seen before, "Sledgehammer" would make a person want to sit through the entirety of the trailer.

Compared to other theme songs from upcoming films, Rihanna's "Sledgehammer" seems to be something of a true masterpiece. However, some news sites were quick to critique the single, branding it as bland and uninspired. According to The Guardian, the single was only driven by the singer's powerful delivery, which means that otherwise it would have been more than forgettable. The song, co-written by Sia, has also been criticized for its rote and unoriginal songwriting.

The Guardian's report also states that the song works best with the intense trailer for the new "Star Trek" flick, as "the robust editing of chaotic galactic action goes a long way to heighten the emotional impact of the track." People still seem to love it though, since it is a song by the much-loved Rihanna. After releasing her eighth studio album offering "Anti," it seems as though she is on top of the world, releasing song after song and headlining multiple sold-out shows.
